Entrambe le espressioni rafforzano l'intenzionalità dell'avvertimento di Terry (Bob Doran, ubriaco, bestemmia Dio, «bloody ruffian», per essersi portato via il povero Dignam): «tipped him the wink» è espressione colloquiale che, attraverso l'ironia del «suggerimento» o «consiglio», manifesta un fondo di minaccia; «to keep» rispetto a «to be» è rafforzato dalla duratività. Bob Doran se ne era rimasto immobile e quieto prima dell'esplosione verbale che provoca la reazione di Terry, perché ubriaco. Terry sta dunque suggerendogli di tornare all'abituale stato di abbrutimento e di rimanerci: la «respectable kind of licensed premises» sopporta come parte del proprio scenario un ubriaco ma non un bestemmiatore. Il brano che nella stessa pagina riguarda Bloom (righe 26-30) subisce nel manoscritto una serie di rielaborazioni la cui funzione, piuttosto trasparente, è quella di accentuare da un lato l'eccesso di prudenza del personaggio e dall'altro l'atteggiamento di scherno del «citizen» (che d'altronde il narratore condivide).
